WOMAN in the lead

  1. Be informed so that you can develop a vision. This includes knowing what you stand for, and will not stand for. Update yourself with regard to what is happening in your neighbourhood, community, country and globally. You can make use of the internet constructively – reading online newspapers, participating in online discussions, creating your own blogs, etc.
  2. Form or join a group that is passionate about the same concern as you are. It will boost your abilities; you will be able to network with others. Remember, leadership is about guiding and showing the way for others, and helping them work together to find direction or reach a particular goal. Community acts such as running soup kitchens in the townships and organizing visits to old-age homes makes people happy, furthermore it will improve your people’s skills. Many websites allow their members to join forums and groups, such as twitter.com, facebook.com and haqqanisoul.com.
  3. Be tolerant and respectful in order to bring about the best in others. Be assertive in all circumstances. Don’t make people hate you! Avoid being overly energized as this can come across as annoying to some people. Concentrate on appreciating different points of view or alternative strategies during discussions, rather than just trying to prove your point.
  4. Educate and motivate others. Observe and listen carefully to others to learn what motivates them. Use your communication skills wisely – praise where it is necessary to do so, and continue speaking in a positive light. Also, try to adopt an attitude like Florence Nightingale who transformed insults into challenges and opportunities. An incident that stands out in particular is the Scutari episode. She was told by the grubbily conservative officials “You’ll only spoil the brutes.” And she replied, “That’s precisely what I want to do. I want to spoil them as brutes and transform them into men.”
  5. Keep track. Keep a journal of critical incidents where you can look back and learn what you did well and what you can do better. You may also consider reading history and biographies of past or current leaders.
